Staying Cool, Healthy, and Happy All Season Long

Summer can be a beautiful time to enjoy family, fresh air, and fun—but it also comes with risks for older adults. At Byrams Homecare, we want to make sure our seniors stay safe while making the most of the season. Here are some helpful summer tips we always recommend:

1. Stay Hydrated – Even If You’re Not Thirsty

As we age, our sense of thirst can decrease, but our bodies still need water. Aim for 6–8 glasses a day. Add fruit slices or drink herbal iced tea to make it more enjoyable. Hydration helps prevent fatigue, confusion, and overheating.

2. Avoid the Midday Heat

Try to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day (usually 11 AM to 3 PM). If you need to run errands or go to appointments, early morning or evening hours are safer—and cooler. Byrams Homecare’s transportation service can help schedule safe rides around the heat!

3. Dress for the Weather

Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton can help keep you cool. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses also provide sun protection when you head outdoors.

4. Protect Your Skin

Even on cloudy days, seniors are at higher risk for sunburn. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 when going outside, and reapply every two hours if you’re spending time outdoors.

5. Keep Your Home Cool

Use fans, air conditioning, or keep shades drawn during the hottest hours to keep your space comfortable. If you don’t have AC, try spending time at a senior center, library, or shopping mall for a cool break.

6. Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Watch for symptoms like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, or confusion. If you or a loved one feels overheated, move to a cool place, sip water, and call for help if needed.

7. Double-Check Medications

Some medications can increase your risk of sunburn or make it harder for your body to cool down. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medications have any heat-related side effects.

8. Plan Safe Outdoor Time

Summer is a great time to enjoy fresh air—just do it safely. Try morning walks, shaded porches, or garden time. Staying active while avoiding peak heat helps with circulation, mood, and mobility.

9. Stay Connected

Heat-related illness can come on quickly. Seniors living alone should check in with a caregiver, friend, or family member daily—especially during heat waves. At Byrams Homecare, our caregivers help keep our clients safe, cool, and connected.

10. Use Transportation Support

Don’t let summer heat keep you from important appointments. Our Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) service helps seniors get to doctors, therapy, or community centers safely—even when it’s hot outside.

Final Word: Summer Should Be Enjoyable, Not Risky

With a few small adjustments, seniors can stay safe while enjoying everything summer has to offer. Whether it’s helping with hydration, offering companionship, or providing reliable transportation, Byrams Homecare is here to support a healthy summer.
