Summer Care and New Ways to Get There: What’s New at Byrams Homecare
Summer is one of our favorite seasons at Byrams Homecare. The days are longer, the sun is shining, and there’s just something about this time of year that brings people together. It’s also a season when our clients—especially our seniors—need extra support to stay safe, cool, and connected to the care they deserve.
That’s why we’re excited to share some updates, along with a few important tips on how to take care of yourself or your loved ones during the hot months ahead.
Let’s start with the big news.
We're Now Offering Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT)
Getting to and from medical appointments shouldn’t be a struggle. And for many of our clients, transportation has been one of the biggest challenges—especially when they don’t drive or when family members can’t always be available to help.
We heard you. And we’re proud to officially launch Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) as part of our services.
This new offering means our clients and their families can rely on Byrams Homecare not just for care in the home, but also a safe, reliable ride to essential places like:
Doctor’s appointments
Physical therapy or dialysis treatments
Pharmacy pick-ups
Hospital discharges
And even community centers or wellness visits
Our vehicles are clean, comfortable, and driven by professionals who understand the needs of older adults, individuals with mobility limitations, and those recovering from illness or surgery. And because our drivers are part of the Byrams team, they carry the same values and commitment to dignity and compassion that our caregivers do.
Whether it’s a one-time need or something ongoing, we’re here to make sure no one has to miss an appointment—or stress about how to get there.
Why Summer Safety Matters More Than Ever
As temperatures climb, so does the risk of heat-related illness—especially for older adults. The body’s ability to regulate temperature changes as we age, making seniors more vulnerable to dehydration, heat stroke, and exhaustion.
But with a few smart precautions, summer can still be a season of health and joy. Here are a few things we always remind our clients and families:
1. Stay Hydrated (Even When You're Not Thirsty)
Dehydration is sneaky. Many seniors don’t feel thirst as strongly, so it’s important to drink water regularly throughout the day—even if they don’t feel like they need to. Adding fruit slices to water or sipping herbal tea can make it a little more enjoyable, too.
2. Avoid the Midday Sun
The hottest part of the day is usually between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. If there are errands or appointments, we try to schedule them in the early morning or late afternoon when possible. And if someone needs a ride during those hours, that’s where our transportation service can help.
3. Dress Light, Inside and Out
Lightweight, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats are a must for staying cool. But it’s also about keeping indoor temperatures comfortable. We always encourage families to check on older loved ones regularly, especially if they don’t have central air conditioning.
4. Check Medications
Some medications can increase the risk of dehydration or make it harder for the body to stay cool. Our team works closely with families and healthcare providers to be aware of any medication concerns during the summer.
Bringing Care Full-Circle
At Byrams Homecare, we’ve always believed that homecare is about more than just tasks. It’s about quality of life. That includes:
Helping someone get dressed or take their meds
Making sure they eat a healthy lunch
Being there to talk, laugh, or share memories
And now—making sure they can get where they need to go
Adding NEMT services is our way of bringing the circle of care full loop. Because health doesn’t just happen inside the home. It happens at the doctor’s office, at the pharmacy, and out in the community.
